Pepper sucked in her breath and blew it out as she stalled. She studied Derek’s ramshackle appearance. He somehow looked smaller in stature. Whipped. Pathetic. She held his hopeful gaze and swallowed. “It’s too late, Derek. You’ve made these promises before. Many times. You’re a womanizer. You’ll never change.”

His nostrils flared. “I said I’ve changed. I’ll—”

“It’s over. We’re over. I decided that when we set sail on the boat excursion. I had planned to tell you after our vacation.” She put both hands on her hips. “Besides, hello?! You freakin’ left me stranded on Key Lime Island. Stranded. You left me all alone on an isolated beach. I didn’t know a soul. Not one. What if Ty hadn’t come along?”

“Elvis to the rescue and here I thought he was dead.” Derek’s lips formed a straight line—a look of defeat. He glared at Pepper and then at Ty. “You’ll be sorry. Both of you.” Derek turned away with his head hung and his hands shoved in his pockets.

“Get out of here and leave us alone,” Ty said.

Derek turned around as he walked. “Oh, it’s ‘us’ now, is it? Like I said, you’ll be sorry. You might want to look over your shoulder from time to time, asshole.”

Pepper noticed Ty’s jaw clenched. They watched Derek walk away using his best bad-boy saunter. He turned around halfway down the beach and flipped them the bird. They didn’t return the offensive gesture but kept watching until he was out of sight.

When she could no longer see Derek, Pepper’s shoulders relaxed. “Now what? He said he’ll come back. I know him. He will. He’ll do everything in his power to make us miserable.”
